'By the window' was an exhibition presenting work by Heini King and Arabee Beveridge. The window exhibition lasted for a month in May in 2021 while London was gradually opening up and Covid-19 related restrictions were being lifted. It was located in a meanwhile space on 551-557 Finchley Road, London that was then occupied by Uthink pdp, a charity committed to providing affordable studio spaces to artists.

PRESS RELEASE

4th -31st May 2021

BY THE WINDOW brings together work by Arabee Beveridge and Heini King.

As curator, King wanted to create an exhibition bringing together work born from the year of the pandemic, and to show it while some of the pandemic-related restrictions are still in place.

Arabee Beveridge’s sculptural work ‘Mend Stones’ was created on a beach in the west of England: “The stones were deliberately broken and repaired with tape, as if there were purpose in this act. The deliberate nature of the act of destruction, followed by a hasty, inappropriate mend, tries to point at the oxymoron of the way we exist and our attitudes to self, relationships and planet”. Beveridge is the founder of studio and residency program Aplpip Arts in Dorset.

King explains: “My monoprints and drawings oscillate in a state between inside and outside. The work has been made from direct observation in public places within the past year, inspired by people in movement. In the curation, I wanted to pair figurative drawings with drawings that fall into abstraction and give way to interpretation in a way reminiscent of Rorschach test. The frames were found on London streets and restored for the installation.”

The experiential and sensory nature of the process and the materiality of the finished product connects the pieces gathered for BY THE WINDOW.
