BACK TO SPACE @heinimariaking

Back to Space (2022) was a seven-day-long performative painting in my digital project space, @heinimariaking, in the social media channel Instagram. The work  functioned as an exhibition recording its own process of creation while it evolved.

Back to Space was made in the context of a peer mentoring group that was formed through an open call. (The group was also called Back to Space.) I was the initiator in the project and through the group I hoped to find other artists whose life circumstances had become difficult for developing their art practice due to multiple pandemic-related changes. The requirement for participants was that, despite of difficulties, they had not lost their desire to look for a way to re-engage with their creative space and practice.

My previous experiments with form in the medium of Instagram paved way to the success of Back to Space. Its time, audience and site-specific format was developed in my earlier performances Sketches and Anecdotes from the Studio (2021) and Instagram Residency with Aplpip Arts (2021). Both of these works also centred around themes of creative process and artistic practice and explored ways of exhibiting the works’ creation in real-time.

Back to Space was enriched by the peer mentoring group Back to Space. I was inspired to study the theoretical ideas the others had central to their thinking. The period offered an opportunity to discuss concepts like glitched self, othered bodies and digital still life, to name a few.

Back to Space was a work that sprang out of necessity to find aid to re-engage with my creative practice. The project was also fed by curiosity to perform a carefully made artwork on a site designed for advertising. Would it be possible for people looking at my work to get a sense of cohesion of the work? While relying on the image-text-time-repetition-reaction -medium of Instagram would it be comprehensible in the challenging environment of a social media channel?

  • Please join me as I'll be working my way Back to Space both literally into a new work space and imaginatively into a state where artistic creation is possible

And excuse the mess - new sketches, archival material and teaching notes are all mixed up! I can't actually fit in just yet for the boxes, old paintings and materials, but I started by painting a dream standing on the doorway to the new studio

    - please bear with me, the unpacking could take weeks!

  • I have now categorised rolls of drawings in a corner. They can't stay there eventually as I am meant to make space for more drawing. Shall I unravel them? And what then?

  • I had to take lots of the boxes outside because they had moths in them. Some of the older textiles I haven't properly looked at since coming to London - presumably for the fear of being unable to connect my life back there and now here

Art is considered to be a bridge between the solitary self and the solitary other

  • I wish there was a way of somehow storing the magic of shared inspiration, perhaps bottling it or…

Anyway, I set a group of young students a task of drawing a still life of cardboard boxes

For centuries still lives have reflected people's customs, values and beliefs

  • I must exhibit these paintings!

They are a series of five works (57x76cm, mixed media on paper) that I named in response to a conversation I had with a friend about the complex ways the pandemic time has impacted professional practice of artists.

The painting series is called "Mothers must/ Mothers must not". It is an abbreviation of a double statement I made in the conversation: 'Mothers must remain in the cultural life of our societies/ Mothers must not vanish from the cultural life of our societies’

  • In my experience it takes trial and error to know the right time to share ideas with others. Some work in process needs sharing straight away, some later and some plans are there to be kept secret and only to be worked towards

I have now started having ideas. That is evidence that the process is working

I am not going to talk about those ideas today but instead, I’ll show images of paintings that will hopefully move on from my studio to make more space. Details about some of them will be on www.newbloodart.com in a few days and viewing is welcomed in my studio in London.

At this point I’d like to warmly thank everyone who joined me @heinimariaking and AFK as I have been working my way Back to Space both literally into a new work space and imaginatively into a state where artistic creation is possible.

Thank you for supporting vibes sent my way as well as responses of all kinds - that has all been very much appreciated! And thank you for being understanding of the mess - new sketches, archival material and teaching notes have all been mixed up and will be for a while!
